World Sleep Day

Feeling exhausted is so common that it has its own acronym, TATT, which stands for "tired all the time". This article was written by our partner, Incorpore

We all feel tired from time to time. The reasons are usually obvious and include, too many late nights, long hours spent at work, and a baby keeping you up at night. But tiredness or exhaustion that goes on for a long time is not normal. It can affect your ability to get on and enjoy your life. Unexplained tiredness is one of the most common reasons for people to see their GP.

But it’s not just about how we feel now, good sleep is crucial for reducing our risk of health conditions as it’s during sleep that our bodies have time to heal and repair.

Lack of sleep is a growing issue and as a nation we’re sleeping 20% less than we did 40 years ago. Our changing lifestyles and access to technology means that the distinction between our work and home lives are becoming more blurred, so it’s increasingly difficult to switch off and relax and this can lead to sleep problems.

Use World Sleep Day to raise awareness of the need for good quality sleep. For further information on improving your sleep go to https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/sleep-and-tiredness/.
