More about Sugar
Added sugars shouldn't make up more than 5% of your calorie intake each day – for adults this is about 30g of sugar a day. Don’t cut down on fruit as it's an important part of achieving a healthy, balanced diet. Instead watch out for the sugar content of the foods that you buy.
Check out the food labels on products you buy to see how much sugar the food contains.
Look for the "Carbohydrates (of which sugars)" figure to see how much sugar the product contains for every 100g:
- A food is high in sugar if it has more than 22.5g of total sugars per 100g of the product
- A food is low in sugar if it has 5g or less of total sugars per 100g of the product
Top tip - the nearer to the beginning of the ingredient list the sugar is, the more sugar the product contains. If the product compares the sugar content to a smaller amount of the product (e.g. 40g) ask yourself, is it trying to hide how much sugar there is?
