Sustainability in the music industry

We all know the importance music plays in our lives, but are artists acting sustainably to create a greener future? We tune into some well-known artists that are beating the drum for sustainability.

From physical vinyl and CD discs to streaming platforms, the music industry has evolved drastically over the years and continues to do so by adopting new ways to connect with their audiences. This trend also continues with the topic of sustainability as artists start to advocate eco-friendly practices, make informed choices in their production processes, and use their influences to educate their fan bases.

Coldplay

A band well-known for their sustainable efforts, Coldplay pledged to cut their carbon footprint in 2019. As a result, they successfully created a sustainable concert experience in their Music of Spheres Tour that solely relied on the use of renewable energy. This reduced their carbon footprint by 59%, compared to their last world tour in 2016-17. This was due to numerous initiatives, including:

  • Cutting down on air travel by taking public transport to gigs when possible
  • Gigs powered by solar panels, kinetic dancefloors and stationary bikes
  • Energy-efficient lighting
  • Building set equipment with eco-friendly materials, like bamboo

The 1975

The 1975 encourage their fans to wear old merchandise and recommend paperless tickets. In fact, their most recent “carbon-removed” shows at London’s O2 Arena was the world’s first and is said to have removed over 500 tonnes of carbon emissions by using biochar and rock weathering. Lead vocalist, Matty Healy, is also known to keep the same outfit during shows – helping to reduce the environmental impact created by concerts.

Billie Ellish

Billie Ellish is not only making waves with her music but also with her advocacy for environmental issues. Since 2019, she has partnered with REVERB to reduce her tours’ environmental footprint, engage fans in climate action, and support non-profit organisations & climate projects.

She also uses her platform to speak out on climate change and the importance of sustainable fashion by wearing outfits made from recycled materials and supporting ethical fashion brands, showing that sustainability is always in style.

Billie asks fans to bring their own reusable bottles to her concerts and ensures there is easy access to recycling bins across the venue. To find out more about the impact of her latest ‘Happier Than Ever’ World Tour, click here.
